Halifax was the nearest major port to the sinking, and White Star chartered the cable ship Mackay-Bennett and others to recover the dead. Around 330 bodies were found, 306 by the Mackay-Bennett alone, of which many were buried at sea. Of the 150 victims interred in three Halifax cemeteries, 121 lie at Fairview Lawn in curving rows of plain granite markers, many bearing only a recovery number and the date 15 April 1912.
