Liverpool – Maritime Mercantile City (delisted 2021)

Six areas of Liverpool's historic centre and docklands, inscribed in 2004 as testimony to the city's role in world trade and in the movement of people — including the transatlantic slave trade and mass emigration. Placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2012 over the proposed Liverpool Waters development, the property saw that scheme and other construction proceed inside the site and its buffer zone. On 21 July 2021, at the 44th session held in Fuzhou, China, the Committee voted 13 in favour, 5 against, with 2 abstentions — one vote above the two-thirds threshold — to delete the property for 'the irreversible loss of attributes conveying the outstanding universal value'. It is the third and most recent deletion. Liverpool contested the decision and has continued to develop the waterfront.
