Bahia de Loreto National Park

A marine and coastal protected area on the eastern side of the Baja California peninsula, established on 19 July 1996, covering 206,580.75 hectares of which about 88 percent is sea surface and taking in the islands of Coronados, Del Carmen, Danzante, Montserrat and Santa Catalina. It joined the Ramsar list in 2004 and was included in the Gulf of California UNESCO World Heritage inscription in 2005. For this Journey it matters as the one place in the migration where the animals are reliably close to a coast under formal protection - nursing females and calves concentrate in these waters in winter.
