The rock-cut capital of the Nabataean kingdom in southern Jordan, its monumental facades carved directly into sandstone cliffs. Al-Khazneh, the so-called Treasury, is generally dated to the late first century BCE or early first century CE and is often identified as the mausoleum of King Aretas IV. Petra was reintroduced to European scholarship in 1812 by the Swiss traveller Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, who reached it disguised as a pilgrim. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 and elected a New7Wonder in 2007.
