Statue of Zeus at Olympia

The chryselephantine seated Zeus made by Phidias for the Temple of Zeus at Olympia in the 430s BCE, about 12 m high, gold and ivory over a wooden core, on a throne inlaid with ebony and precious stones. Its date was confirmed archaeologically when Phidias's workshop was excavated at Olympia in the 1950s and a cup was found inscribed with the words meaning 'I belong to Phidias'. How it ended is unresolved: it may have perished when the temple was destroyed in 426 CE, or after removal to Constantinople, in a fire often dated 475 CE or in a later disaster. It is the seventh ancient wonder and is not named in this Journey's declaration.
