Blue Mosque

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque — the Blue Mosque — was completed in 1616 and remains an active place of worship. Its interior is tiled with over twenty thousand Iznik ceramic tiles, blue at any light. Six minarets drew controversy at construction; they still define the Istanbul skyline alongside the Hagia Sophia directly across the square.
