Burning Man is the world's most ambitious temporary city and the most radical large-scale experiment in gift-economy social organisation in contemporary culture — an annual event held in Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis constructed on the Black Rock Desert playa in Nevada, accommodating 70,000–80,000 participants across seven days ending on Labor Day weekend, whose founding principles (radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation, and immediacy) constitute a social philosophy that has influenced the organisational culture of the technology industry, the contemporary art world, and alternative community movements more broadly than any other single event format.
