Jökulsárlón is the world's most rapidly changing glacial lagoon — a proglacial lake in southeastern Iceland formed by the retreat of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier (an outlet of the Vatnajökull ice cap, Europe's largest glacier by volume) that did not exist before 1935, has quadrupled in size since 1975, and currently covers approximately 18 square kilometres as the glacier retreats at 500 metres per year, calving icebergs of blue and white ice that drift through the lagoon before being carried by the tidal current into the Atlantic Ocean 500 metres away. As a Natural Extremity Node, Glacier Lagoon maps the class of glacial geographies whose intelligence value derives from the visibility of climate change in real time: Jökulsárlón's expansion rate — measurable year-on-year from satellite imagery — is the most directly observable single-site evidence of glacial retreat in Europe, making the lagoon a living climate instrument whose changing dimensions are published annually. The Diamond Beach directly adjacent — where Atlantic waves deposit ice blocks onto a black lava sand shore, creating formations of translucent blue ice against volcanic black in combinations that exist for hours before the ice melts — is the most photographically distinctive single beach in Iceland and the location used in James Bond's A View to a Kill (1985) and Tomb Raider (2001). The glacier's ice contains atmospheric records of up to 1,000 years, and the calved icebergs drifting through the lagoon carry compressed air bubbles from centuries past, creating a scenario where ancient atmospheric samples melt into current seawater within sight of the road. Jökulsárlón demonstrates that the most consequential natural extremities are not always the ones requiring the most effort to reach — sometimes the most significant climate evidence in Europe is crossing a two-lane highway and is accessible by family car.
