The Westfjords is Iceland's most remote and least-visited region — a 9,470-square-kilometre peninsula of deep fjords and basalt plateau in Iceland's northwest, accessible by a single road that becomes impassable for months each winter, containing approximately 7,000 permanent residents in a geography of 22 fjords, 60-kilometre-deep inlets, and cliffs reaching 440 metres that require more driving time from Reykjavik (5–6 hours) than any other inhabited part of the country. As a Natural Extremity Node, Westfjords Ghost maps the class of subarctic geographies whose intelligence value derives from the contrast between natural richness and human absence: the Westfjords' seabird cliffs at Látrabjarg — the westernmost point in Europe, a 14-kilometre sea cliff rising 440 metres at the Atlantic's edge — support the world's largest puffin colony (approximately 1 million pairs), the most concentrated razorbill colony in the world, and breeding populations of guillemots, fulmars, and kittiwakes in numbers that make it the most biodiverse seabird geography in the North Atlantic. Dynjandi waterfall — a 100-metre fan-shaped cascade in the Arnarfjörður fjord system — is the most architecturally distinctive waterfall in Iceland, its shape produced by a series of progressively wider ledges that give it a tiered fan structure with no equivalent in Icelandic or Scandinavian hydrology. The Westfjords' ghost designation is earned by absence: in a country of 2.3 million annual visitors, the Westfjords receives approximately 80,000 — fewer visitors per year than the Colosseum receives in two days — maintaining an emptiness that is the primary product of the region and the characteristic most difficult to preserve as Icelandic tourism continues to grow.
