Ice Hotel Suite
Ice Hotel, Jukkasjärvi
Legendary · held by 96 collectors
The ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland, is the world's first and most conceptually complete ice hotel — a structure rebuilt entirely from ice and snow each winter from the waters of the Torne River (whose ice quality, determined by the freezing rate and water purity of a specific section of the river, has been developed over 35 years of construction experience into a precise architectural material), whose individual suites are designed each year by a rotating cast of artists and architects (selected from an annual open call drawing hundreds of international applicants) and whose physical form is completely destroyed by the following spring's melt before being reconstructed — creating an accommodation category whose primary characteristic is designed impermanence. As a Natural Extremity Node, the Ice Hotel Suite maps the class of experiences whose intelligence value derives from their impossible-to-replicate physical conditions: sleeping at −5°C in an ice suite (in specially designed sleeping bags rated to −35°C on raised ice beds covered with reindeer skins), surrounded by walls of sculptural ice illuminated by candles or fibre-optic arrays, constitutes an experience whose sensory specificity — the smell of ice, the silence of snow insulation, the temperature's effect on breathing, the quality of cold blue light through ice of varying thickness — cannot be approximated by any room service, thread-count, or view in any conventional hotel. The ICEHOTEL's supporting ecology — the husky safari, the northern lights chase, the ice fishing, the Aurora Sky Station on Abisko mountain (whose elevated position above the cloud line provides the most reliable northern lights viewing position in Scandinavia) — creates a total arctic programme whose components are mutually reinforcing, making the Jukkasjärvi experience the most coherent single-destination Arctic offering outside of research expeditions.
