The Megavalanche is the world's most dramatic mass-start mountain bike race — an annual enduro event held in July on the slopes above Alpe d'Huez in the French Alps, beginning at 3,330 metres altitude on the Pic Blanc glacier and descending approximately 2,700 vertical metres over 25–35 kilometres to the finish at Allemont in the valley below, a descent combining glacier ice, alpine snowfields (even in July), rocky alpine terrain, fast gravel singletracks through mountain pastures, and the technical forest trails of the lower Romanche valley into a single course whose variety and vertical drop make it unlike any other mountain bike race in the world. As a Natural Extremity Node, the Megavalanche maps the class of competitions whose intelligence value derives from the physical challenge the terrain imposes: the race's opening glacier start — approximately 1,500 riders releasing simultaneously from the glacier at the Pic Blanc gondola's summit station, creating a mass of riders flowing over ice in conditions that combine deep loose snow, hidden crevasses, and collision risk — is the most visually dramatic start in mountain biking and one of the most genuinely dangerous moments in any civilian sporting competition, during which more riders crash in the first 60 seconds than at any other point in the race. The event's unique character is its democratic participation structure: unlike other enduro and downhill races whose entry lists are closed to professionals, the Megavalanche has always admitted amateur participants, creating a field in which the same course is contested simultaneously by professional riders capable of sub-50-minute descents and amateur enthusiasts taking 2+ hours, and in which the physical challenge of the terrain treats both categories with equal indifference. The shadow designation reflects the Megavalanche's specific atmospheric quality: the glacier start at dawn, the altitude, the summer snowfield conditions, and the descent through multiple vertical climate zones from arctic to temperate in a single continuous effort create a racing experience whose physical and sensory intensity is not reproducible at any lower-altitude or shorter-distance event.
