The Geographic South Pole is the world's most consequential single coordinate — a point at 90°00'00"S on the East Antarctic Ice Sheet at an elevation of 2,835 metres, 1,300 kilometres from the nearest open water, accessible only by ski expedition (12–14 days from Hercules Inlet), ski-equipped aircraft, or overland traverse, and the site of the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, the United States' permanent Antarctic research facility that has been continuously staffed since 1956. As a Natural Extremity Node, Pole Sovereign maps the class of geographic extremities whose intelligence value derives from the historical weight of human achievement attached to a specific coordinate: the South Pole was reached first by Roald Amundsen on 14 December 1911, 33 days ahead of Robert Falcon Scott, and Scott's death on the return journey (17 February 1912) produced one of the most documented and most culturally processed episodes of polar exploration — diaries, photographs, and meteorological records that Scott's party continued maintaining until within 20 kilometres of their final camp — making the South Pole simultaneously a scientific station and a memorial.
