Scott Base is the most consequential polar research node that civilian visitors can access — New Zealand's Antarctic research station on Ross Island, 3.5 kilometres from the United States' McMurdo Station (the largest Antarctic station, with up to 1,000 residents in summer), adjacent to the hut preserved from Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition (1910–1913) and Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition (1907–1909) — making it the only operational Antarctic research station where the current science, the founding mythology, and the preserved historical infrastructure exist in direct physical proximity.
