Sydney Marathon

The Sydney Marathon is the newest entrant to the Abbott World Marathon Majors (achieving Abbott WMM Series status in 2023) and the most scenically concentrated — a 42.195-kilometre race held annually in September, starting at the Sydney Opera House, crossing the Harbour Bridge (whose 52-metre elevation above sea level at the midpoint of the bridge produces the course's primary visual spectacle), passing through North Sydney and returning via the Spit Bridge to the finish in the Domain, incorporating three bridge crossings and consistent harbour views whose accumulated photographic value per kilometre exceeds any other major course. Sydney's specific achievement as a new major is the quality of its starting location: departing from the Opera House's forecourt and running the first metres with the Harbour Bridge visible ahead constitutes an opening sequence whose combination of architectural landmark and natural harbour geography is unmatched among the six majors.
