Maasai Mara National Reserve
node · earth
A Kenyan national reserve of about 1,510 km² in Narok County, contiguous with Serengeti National Park across the international border and managed by county authorities rather than by Kenya Wildlife Service. It began in 1961 as a 520 km² sanctuary in the Mara Triangle, was expanded, then reduced by stages to its present area by 1984. It is the northern, wetter end of the migratory circuit and holds the herds through roughly July to October; it is also Kenya's most visited wildlife destination, with year-round resident big-cat populations that are the basis of its safari reputation.

- Evidence
- Establishes gazettement dates, areas and protection status for the protected areas that carry the migratory circuit
- The Mara–Loita wildebeest population fell about 80.9% from 123,930 in 1977–78 to under 20,000 by 2016, and the Athi–Kaputiei population by about 95%, driven by mechanised wheat farming, fencing, settlement and infrastructure
- An average of about 6,250 wildebeest carcasses and 1,100 tonnes of biomass enter the Mara River annually, with mass drownings in at least 13 of 15 monitored years, forming a major nutrient subsidy to the river food web
