A transboundary river rising in the Mau Escarpment of Kenya at around 3,000 m and running roughly 395 km south-west through the Maasai Mara and northern Serengeti into Lake Victoria, draining a basin of about 13,504 km² split roughly 65% Kenya and 35% Tanzania. It is the only perennial water across the northern end of the circuit and the site of the migration's famous crossings; in the Serengeti reach guides recognise about a dozen habitual crossing points near Kogatende and Lamai rather than one fixed ford. Subalusky et al. (2017) measured an average of about 6,250 wildebeest carcasses and 1,100 tonnes of biomass entering the river per year, with mass drownings in at least 13 of 15 monitored years.
