Challenger Deep

The deepest known point of the world ocean, a slot-shaped depression at the southern end of the Mariana Trench, named for HMS Challenger which first sounded the area in 1875. Its depth is genuinely unsettled: post-2000 published values cluster roughly between 10,910 m and 10,935 m below mean sea level, with a 2010 multibeam survey reporting a considerably deeper 10,984 +/- 25 m that direct pressure-gauge descents have not confirmed. Different surveys use different methods (wire sounding, echo sounder, multibeam, submersible pressure gauge), different sound-velocity corrections and different vertical datums, and the published disagreements exceed the stated uncertainties. Commonly cited position: about 11 deg 22.4' N, 142 deg 35.5' E.

  46. Post-2000 published maximum depths for the Challenger Deep, and the geodetic positions assigned to them, disagree by more than the accompanying stated uncertainties. A 2010 multibeam survey recorded a deepest sounding of 10,984 +/- 25 m, a value not confirmed by any direct pressure-gauge descent.
  47. Submersible transects conducted in June 2020 yield a revised Challenger Deep floor depth of 10,935 m (+/- 6 m at 95 percent confidence) below mean sea level. Earlier direct measurements include DEEPSEA CHALLENGER at 10,908 +/- 3 m and its landers at 10,918 +/- 3 m (2012).
  48. In March 1995 the ROV Kaiko reached the floor of the Challenger Deep — the second vehicle ever to do so and the first since Trieste in 1960 — with a maximum depth on that dive reported as 10,911.4 m, one value in a cluster of published figures that do not agree. Kaiko dived the Challenger Deep more than twenty times before its secondary cable parted at 4,675 m on 29 May 2003 and the vehicle was lost. V55 verification basis: the programme records and the ISOPE loss papers were retrieved in summary rather than read in full — this session has no direct network access to jamstec.go.jp.
  49. GEBCO maintains the reference global bathymetric grid under joint IHO/IOC auspices; the Seabed 2030 project, launched in 2017, aims to map the entire ocean floor. Its own reporting for World Hydrography Day 2025 put 27.3 per cent of the ocean floor mapped to modern standards, up from 26.1 per cent a year earlier — so roughly three-quarters of the seafloor remains unsurveyed at modern resolution. V55 verification basis: the Seabed 2030 announcement was retrieved in summary; the GEBCO grid documentation itself was not opened, this session having no direct network access to gebco.net.
