International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea signed in London

Thirteen maritime states signed the first SOLAS convention: lifeboat capacity for every person carried, regular drills, subdivision standards, a continuous radio watch at sea, and an ice patrol for the North Atlantic. War prevented its formal entry into force, but its substance passed into national law and into the 1929 convention, and SOLAS governs shipping safety to this day.
