1985 Franco-American Titanic search

A joint IFREMER and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution effort: the French vessel Le Suroît ran a sonar sweep of the search box in the summer of 1985, then the American R/V Knorr followed with the towed camera sled Argo. Rather than hunt the hull, Robert Ballard's team searched for the debris trail it would have shed, and on 1 September 1985 Argo's cameras returned images of a boiler on the seabed. The cruise doubled as a US Navy-funded survey of the lost submarines Thresher and Scorpion, a connection declassified only in 2008.
