Subcommittee of the Senate Commerce Committee chaired by Senator William Alden Smith of Michigan, convened at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York on 19 April 1912 — the morning after Carpathia docked — specifically to hold British witnesses before they could sail home. It moved to Washington, heard 82 witnesses and reported on 28 May 1912. It faulted the Californian, the absence of lifeboat drill and of a continuous wireless watch, and a boat capacity sufficient for barely half those aboard.
