The first crewed spacecraft to leave Earth orbit, reach the Moon and return. Launched 21 December 1968 at 12:51 UTC from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39A on the first crewed flight of the Saturn V, carrying Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders. The crew made ten orbits of the Moon on 24–25 December, broadcast live on Christmas Eve, and photographed the Earth rising over the lunar limb. Apollo 8 flew without a Lunar Module and made no landing attempt; its purpose was to prove translunar navigation, lunar-orbit insertion and return, and to survey candidate landing sites.
