South Africa's flagship national park, roughly 19,485 km2 along the Mozambique border, consolidated as a national park in 1926 from the Sabi and Shingwedzi game reserves proclaimed under the South African Republic and British administrations. Its present boundaries were reached through successive land acquisitions and, in the apartheid period, through the removal of resident African communities — most documented among them the Makuleke, removed from the Pafuri area in 1969. Kruger is administered by SANParks and is a core anchor of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area.
