J. Bruce Ismay

person

Chairman and managing director of the White Star Line and president of International Mercantile Marine, born 1862, son of the line's founder. He travelled on the maiden voyage as a guest of the company, was handed the Baltic's ice warning by Captain Smith on 14 April and kept it in his pocket for several hours, and left in Collapsible C near the end of the evacuation. Neither inquiry found him culpable, but the American press and much of British opinion never forgave his survival; he withdrew from public life and died in 1937.

A person is not a place. Drawing it on a map would assert something about the world that no stored fact supports.
