Robert Ballard

person

American oceanographer, born 1942, then at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who co-led the 1985 search that found the Titanic and returned in 1986 with the submersible Alvin and the tethered robot Jason Junior for the first human visits to the wreck. His insight was to hunt the debris trail rather than the hull. He has argued consistently for the site to be treated as a grave and left unsalvaged, and later located the Bismarck, the Yorktown and other historic wrecks.
