Work begins on the Chinese Eastern Railway across Manchuria

Russia begins the Manchurian shortcut from Tarskaya east of Chita through Hailar and Harbin to Nikolsk-Ussuriysky, choosing it over the Amur alignment because it is shorter and the Amur ground is worse. Work accelerates after Russia takes a 25-year lease of Liaodong in 1898, and a branch is driven south to the ice-free naval base at Lüshun. Traffic opens in 1901; through passenger running from European Russia to Vladivostok begins in July 1903.
