Aomori Nebuta Matsuri runs for six days in August — giant illuminated papier-mâché floats of warriors, demons, and mythological figures parade through the city each evening, surrounded by dancers called haneto in traditional costumes. Three million visitors attend; the floats, some seven metres high, are rebuilt each year. The final night floats are loaded onto ships and paraded on the bay.
