Basler Fasnacht begins at exactly 4am on the Monday after Ash Wednesday — every light in Basel is extinguished. Then the Morgestraich: thousands of masked cliques march through the dark city by lantern light only, piccolos and drums playing simultaneously. The three-day carnival is one of the most atmospheric in Europe, despite — or because of — taking place in strict, orderly Basel.
