The Venice Carnival reclaims the entire city for ten days each February — masks required in the historic centre, boats processing along the Grand Canal, the Piazza San Marco filled with costumed figures in eighteenth-century dress. Revived in 1979 after nearly two centuries, it has become the world's most photographed masquerade. The masks anonymise status; anyone can be anyone.
