Pompeii was buried under four metres of volcanic ash when Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE, preserving an entire Roman city in mid-life. Bakeries with bread still in the ovens, electoral campaign graffiti on walls, body casts of those who waited too long to flee. Two thousand years of absence, then ongoing excavation since 1748.
