Californian's ice message cut off — 'keep out, I am busy'

Stopped and surrounded by ice, the Californian's operator Cyril Evans broke in on Titanic's traffic to say so. At close range his signal swamped Phillips's headphones and Phillips told him to keep out. Evans listened a little longer, then shut down the set for the night — the reason no distress call ever reached the nearest ship.
