A Nilotic-speaking pastoralist people of northern Tanzania and southern Kenya whose seasonal grazing systems overlap almost exactly with the reserves of the Serengeti–Mara and Amboseli ecosystems. Maasai communities were removed from Serengeti National Park in 1959, lost rights inside Amboseli on its 1974 gazettement, and are the subject of an ongoing relocation programme from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Loliondo begun in 2022. Maasai institutions and human rights organisations describe these as forced evictions carried out without free, prior and informed consent; the Tanzanian government describes them as voluntary relocation necessary to relieve population and livestock pressure on a World Heritage landscape. Both accounts are recorded here; they are not equivalent in the evidence available, and the disagreement is itself part of the record.
