Cunard Line steamer under Captain Arthur Rostron, eastbound for the Mediterranean when her wireless operator picked up Titanic's distress call. About 58 nautical miles away, she turned, drove north at close to 17 knots through the same ice field with extra lookouts posted and the heating shut down to raise steam, and reached the lifeboats around 04:00 on 15 April. She took aboard roughly 705 survivors and landed them at New York on 18 April. Carpathia was torpedoed and sunk by U-55 off southern Ireland in July 1918.
