Chartres Cathedral retains the most complete medieval stained-glass programme in existence — 172 windows, 2,600 square metres of glass dating from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The Royal Portal sculptural programme and the two asymmetrical towers define the French countryside from thirty kilometres away. UNESCO called it one of the masterpieces of Western civilisation.
