Notre-Dame de Paris on the Île de la Cité was begun in 1163 and completed two centuries later. Its flying buttresses, rose windows, and 850-year continuity of worship made it the most visited monument in France. The 2019 fire collapsed the spire and destroyed the roof; the global response — a billion euros pledged within days — confirmed what the building meant. The restored cathedral reopened in 2024.
