Beauvais Cathedral holds the world record for the highest Gothic choir vault — 48.5 metres, built in the thirteenth century at the absolute limit of medieval engineering. The nave was never completed; the tower collapsed in 1573. What remains is the most audacious fragment in the history of architecture — the ambition visible in every stone, the failure written in every missing bay.
