Timkat
Gondar, Amhara, Ethiopia
Legendary · held by 383 collectors

Timkat is the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany — the most important festival in the Ethiopian calendar. In Gondar, the tabot (replica of the Ark of the Covenant) from each church is carried in procession to a pool, blessed, and carried back at dawn. Priests in gold brocade vestments, thousands of white-robed worshippers, drumming choirs. A Christian ceremony unchanged for centuries.
