The largest living land mammal and the organising species of eastern and southern African reserve systems. Assessed separately from the African forest elephant since the IUCN's 2021 split of Loxodonta into two species; the savanna elephant is listed Endangered. The 2016 Great Elephant Census counted 352,271 savanna elephants across 18 countries and reported a roughly 30% decline between 2007 and 2014 in the 15 countries with comparable earlier data. Population is highly unevenly distributed: over half of the continental savanna total sits inside KAZA. Elephants range far beyond park boundaries, which is why they are the species that most exposes the limits of fenced-in protection.
