Coordinated KAZA aerial survey estimates about 227,900 elephants

Between August and October 2022, seven aircraft flew a coordinated dry-season survey across the five KAZA states, producing an estimate of roughly 227,900 elephants, with Botswana holding the largest national share at about 131,909. The result was reported as broadly stable against the 2016 IUCN African Elephant Status Report. Stability at KAZA scale coexists with local overabundance and severe conflict at settlement edges — the headline number is not by itself a conservation verdict.
